How to Leverage ChatGPT for Your Resume

Updated: Jun 26, 2024

A client of mine recently moved her entire life to NYC for a role that ended up being indefinitely postponed. 😬 She had already moved in and everything.

As you can imagine, she needed a new job ASAP. She reached out to Confetti for tips on her resume, knowing she would need to customize it multiple times to fit a variety of roles and companies. I built this little ChatGPT prompt system to help her do it.

CHATGPT for Beginners

There are hundreds of amazing AI-expert, content creators out there. Imma be honest - I'm not one. I'm just a regular girl trying to make my day job a bit easier. That said, I've been really inspired lately by creators (like Ruben Hassid) to increase my understanding from maybe level 1.0 to level 1.2, and it has been incredibly helpful.

I figured some of you readers out there might be able to benefit from my mini mastery of a tiny slice of ChatGPT's power. If you are more informed than my completely arbitrary leveling system of 1.2, you can exit - this is for those who are brand new and need some hand-holding!

a REAL, Usable CHATGPT Prompt

As helpful as tips and tricks are, I prefer very practical takeaways. Don't make me read this blog post only to go find another blog post that will teach me what to do, right??

The key to ChatGPT is this: what you get out of it is completely dependent on your mastery over what you put into it. Simply put, if you can master the prompts you feed the machine, the machine will spit out incredible results. If you can master it, you will never have to create another resume, email, or breakup text on your own again.

customize your resume to stand out

Alright, back to our client. We are going to call her Jill. She has a political science degree and a few internships under her belt. As a recent grad, Jill has many options for her career path and is lacking clarity as to what the best direction is for her. We narrowed it down to the two role types that would be easiest for her to land interviews with:

  1. Political roles (DA office, working for a senator or representative, etc.)

  2. Administrative roles (executive assistant, project management, etc.)

  3. Marketing roles (social media, events, etc.)

At this point, we know you can't use the same resume and blast it out to hundreds of employers and expect positive results. You need to customize your resume, cover letter, and engagement with each company/role. In this article, I'm only going to focus on the resume.

When you are applying to dozens of roles, how do you do this efficiently?

Enter: ChatGPT 🙏

Give me the prompt already

Alright, alright - here we go. First step is the initial prompt. Jill happened to find a marketing internship that seemed perfect for her. This was a fun scenario to test because her politically-focused resume needed a full rebranding to cater to this role.

Here is my initial prompt:

____________________________________________

Act as a recruiting specialist of 25 years with extensive experience reviewing and tailoring resumes to help candidates land their dream jobs.

Follow the below steps in order:

1. Review the below job description within quotations.

"[copy/paste the job description here within quotations - be sure to edit weird formatting errors as you copy them into the system]"

2. Review Jill's resume within the below quotations.

"[copy/paste resume text here within quotations]"

3. Provide detailed adjustments to her resume in order to fit the job description from step 1. Do not provide broad statements or advice. Do provide specific bullet points. Do not make up any of her experiences, simply tailor her existing experiences from step 2 to fit the requirements of the job description better. Do include key words from the job description.

Take a deep breath and work on this problem one step at a time. Thank you!

_____________________________________

Kinda fun, right? You're going to love what it spit back at her. I won't share the details for Jill's privacy (since it literally details every single one of her work experiences), but essentially ChatGPT came back with adjusted, marketing-focused bullet points for each of the sections of her resume, specifically layering in keywords from the job description (very important given that HR departments often use AI to scan thousands of resumes at a time for specific words and phrases). It even formatted it for her!

This is what ChatGPT said after re-creating her resume for the marketing internship role:

"These adjustments emphasize Jill's skills and experiences that are directly relevant to the job description, such as storytelling, content creation, public speaking, digital engagement, strategic thinking, and organizational skills. This tailored resume should help her stand out as a strong candidate for the marketing internship at ____."

Follow-up prompts:

In the same ChatGPT thread, we then asked the following:

Can you please write a 4 sentence summary of Jill's qualifications, explaining why she is a great fit for the role? She will include this at the top of her resume. Please write this in the first person.

I like to include what I call "the elevator pitch" at the top of my resume. It's almost like a 3-4 sentence cover letter, summarizing who I am. This mini prompt makes that easy and fast.

Then we asked (always in the same thread - we are building ChatGPT's knowledge here):

Do you have any advice for Jill to stand out as a candidate for this marketing role, despite having primarily political experience as her background?

_____________________________________

This is where I want to share some of the great response we got in return. It's beautiful, and very helpful for Jill once she gets her first screening interview.

"Absolutely! Here are some additional ideas and advice for Jill to stand out as a candidate for this marketing role despite her primarily political background:

Leverage Transferable Skills

Communication and Storytelling:

  • Highlight how her political roles required strong communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Emphasize her experience in creating compelling narratives for newsletters, articles, and speeches.

Research and Analysis:

  • Point out her extensive research experience, which is crucial for understanding market trends and consumer behavior in marketing.

  • Discuss how her analytical skills can be applied to measure campaign performance and derive actionable insights.

Event Planning and Coordination:

  • Showcase her event management experience, such as organizing seminars and legislative events, as these skills are highly relevant for PR and marketing events.

Public Speaking and Presentations:

  • Mention her experience with public speaking and leading discussions, which are valuable for presenting marketing strategies and engaging with stakeholders.

Multitasking and Project Management:

  • Discuss how managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced political environment has prepared her for the dynamic nature of marketing roles.

Demonstrate Passion for Beauty and Marketing

Personal Interest in Beauty:

  • Share any personal experiences or interests in beauty, such as favorite products, beauty routines, or following beauty influencers and trends.

  • If applicable, mention any personal beauty blog or social media presence she may have started or managed.

Marketing Knowledge:

  • Show her proactive learning by mentioning any online courses, certifications, or self-study in marketing, digital marketing, or social media management.

  • Discuss her understanding of current marketing trends, particularly in the beauty industry."

What's wonderful is that Jill could double-click into any one of these points to get ideas or information. For example, with the last bullet point, she could ask,

"What are the current marketing trends in the beauty industry in 2024? Can you provide 3 examples of successful campaigns including sources?"

You'll get GREAT stuff that way. The more specific you are, the better.

We then prompted ChatGPT to create verbiage for her interaction with the recruiter. As soon as she applied, she also shot an email off to an HR rep she had previously engaged with. You can do this with the recruiter listed on the job posting, the hiring manager, etc. Adding a personal touch/connection will never be a bad idea!

Jill previously interviewed for a different role at ____. Help her write a brief email for the recruiter she met with, asking for her thoughts on Jill's adjusted resume and if she would be willing to pass her along for the role.

Too easy. You got this, Jill.

Conclusion

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool, even if you only understand it at my 1.2 level. Hopefully this prompt can help you make the job hunt just a little easier and more fruitful.

Disclaimer - everything I've learned has been from other creators like Ruben. Check him out for practical, useful content. I paid for his ChatGPT library and it has been a life-saver. No, I don't get commission for saying this, but clearly I should reach out to him and negotiate that...
